Chestnut-collared Longspur Balboa Park

Sunday morning, 28 October, there was a CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR on the baseball field in the north west corner of Balboa Park. This is the field that is locked and you have to survey from outside the fence. It is west of the practice field (which is open to the public) and south of the velodrome.

San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count – next Sunday, November 4th!

This is a reminder about the next San Dieguito monthly bird count. The November 2018 bird count is on the first Sunday  – November 4th..
Everyone is welcome – interested, beginners, visitors, experienced birders.

We will meet at the usual time and place: 7:30 AM at the south end of San Andres. (Turn right/south off of Via De La Valle, on the east side of I5. San Andres dead ends at the San Dieguito Lagoon.) We coordinate with park rangers to provide vests and access for the restricted areas. We'll divide into five groups to count the different areas.

We gather to tally our results at noon at the Del Mar Public Works parking lot/picnic tables off Jimmy Durante Rd.

I spent this morning (Oct 26) doing a little birding in San Diego County. Up in the Lagunas, I saw three Clark's Nutcrackers near Los Rasailes Lake, and the continuing flock of Pinyon Jays just north of the horse corral and water trough (see eBird report for more details). I then went to look for the Ovenbird at the Bird & Butterfly Garden without success. I believe there was continuous coverage from 10 am to 1 pm without any sightings.

American Bittern at Santee Lakes

Thursday morning, I got a brief view of a fly-by American Bittern at Santee Lakes.  Bird was flying low over the creek along the west side of the park near the southern end of Lake 6, heading south.  I did not see if it landed, veered off, or continued.

Mission Bay Short-eared owl

This morning (10/25/18) at 9AM, a SHORT-EARED OWL flew through Kendall-Frost Marsh.
