results of 12 Nov 2018 san elijo monthly bird count

Thanks to 10 participants for conducting the 12 November 2018 San Elijo Lagoon monthly bird count: Steve Brad (beach/offshore, West Basin, nature center site); Elizabeth Venrick, Dave Carey (Pole Rd); Jayne Lesley, Gail DeLalla, Rigdon Currie(CBS= Rios to freeway); Kathy Aldern, Patti Koger, (EBS = La Orilla to Sta Inez); Steve Perry (EBE = Stonebridge Mesa); Robert Patton (EBNW = dike; EBNE = Escondido Cr; Cardiff Cove, I-5 fill).

 

Most areas were relatively quiet with the dry weather & warm winds.  Species of interest included continuing reddish egret, initially between the RR tracks & highway 101, then later to the east of the RR tracks; the continuing western kingbird, seen SE of Mira Costa, north of where previously reported; a rough-winged swallow, two mountain bluebirds, and a grasshopper sparrow on the eastern mesa (as reported by Steve earlier today; accessed by heading north from Sta Helena).

102 species were recorded: common loon, pied-billed grebe, eared grebe, western grebe, Clark’s grebe, brown pelican, double-crested cormorant, Brandt’s cormorant, great blue heron, great egret, snowy egret, white-faced ibis, green-winged teal, mallard, northern pintail, northern shoveler, gadwall, American wigeon, bufflehead, ruddy duck, turkey vulture, osprey, white-tailed kite, northern harrier, Cooper’s hawk, red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, peregrine falcon, California quail, Ridgway’s rail, sora, American coot, black-bellied plover, snowy plover, semipalmated plover, killdeer, greater yellowlegs, willet, spotted sandpiper, whimbrel, long-billed curlew, marbled godwit, black turnstone, sanderling, western sandpiper, least sandpiper, dowitcher sp., Heermann’s gull, ring-billed gull, California gull, herring gull, western gull, royal tern, rock pigeon, Eurasian collared-dove, mourning dove, Anna’s hummingbird, Allen’s hummingbird, Allen’s/rufous hummingbird sp., belted kingfisher, Nuttall’s woodpecker, northern flicker, black phoebe, Say’s phoebe, Cassin’s kingbird, western kingbird, tree swallow, northern rough-winged swallow, California scrub jay, American crow, common raven, bushtit, Bewick’s wren, house wren, marsh wren, ruby-crowned kinglet, blue-gray gnatcatcher, California gnatcatcher, western bluebird, mountain bluebird, hermit thrush, wrentit, northern mockingbird, California thrasher, American pipit, European starling, Hutton’s vireo, orange-crowned warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, common yellowthroat, spotted towhee, California towhee, Belding’s savannah sparrow, migrant savannah sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, song sparrow, golden-crowned sparrow, white-crowned sparrow, red-winged blackbird, western meadowlark, house finch, lesser goldfinch, house sparrow, scaly-breasted munia.
