storm-petrel glut, Ring-necked Duck
On Thursday the 13th, there was a record-count from shore of 2500 Black Storm-Petrels at La Jolla, soon after dawn. A large percent of the birds were to the NNW over the canyon. Numbers dropped off a little over the ensuing two hours, but there were still 1500+ when I departed. Otherwise, 80 Black-vented Shearwaters, but not much else.
On Friday the 14th, there is a summering, female Ring-necked Duck at Santee Lakes (Lake #3). Also the continuing couple Acorn Woodpeckers that have been there for ca. 5 years since the coastal-slope incursion back then. Nearby, at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course, the new colony of Double-crested Cormorants has five active nests.
