probable Evening Grosbeak, University City, 29 Dec 2019

This afternoon, at my apartment complex, I saw two birds fly by overhead.  Prior to seeing them, I first heard the flight calls, and thought they sounded a bit familiar, likely to be 'winter finch' calls of some sort-  A loud descending 'tchew' note or such, some singles and some in pairs,

I am no expert on winter finch calls.  I quickly went online, and these calls matched well with Cornell web-site, Call 5 audio.  Call 1 also, perhaps, but difficult to distinguish the sound of only one or two birds from Call 1.  I played back calls from two birds I heard in numbers just a few weeks ago, at Laguna Mountain area- the grosbeak, and the Red Crossbill.

My look, without my glasses, didn't show much for the two birds, other than that they appeared to be about cowbird-sized.

Good Birding,
