Several Hundred Swainson's Hawks in Borrego Springs

Today, several hundred hawks (1,000-1,400) were spotted in Borrego Springs. The feeding opportunities (caterpillars) have been widespread in Southern California. Traditionally Borrego Springs has been a staging area for hundreds of hawks migrating north in spring. This season only a small proportion of migrating hawks were counted in March. The hawks have been feeding throughout the region and now we believe are gathering in Borrego Valley before departing north. It's hard to pinpoint the locations of the hawks on a given day. Today however, we located hawks at several locations including:

1. East of the airport off of S-22
2. Old Springs Rd near the dump off of S-22
3. West on S-22 on the way to Pegleg
4. East of Henderson Canyon Rd spread over several fields
It is possible that the hawks observed today may have continued migrating north. We will be searching the area later this afternoon and will send a report if they are still in the valley. I will send out an ALERT if we find the hawks. You can be added to the ALERT system with an email to me. Raptorhal3@…
If anyone spots kettles of hawks today, please send me a note.
